                                    Game III: Dodging the Question

He sidestepped her again, then ducked as she swept the great sword to the side. She glared at him, then tossed her head and huffed. He watched her pigtails fly idly by, waiting for her next try at him. “Why am I fighting you again?”
“You’re not! You’re just dodging me!” She tossed an immobilization spell at him, but she was so unfocused he shrugged it off without trying. Chi lunged, and he took her by the arm, pulling her past harmlessly. He plucked the claymore out of her hands and tossed it aside.
            “BLESS!”
“Guh—” He released her and flashed away, watching the grass where he’d been sparkle and shine with holy cleanliness. “Chi, was that really—”
            “Hold still! BLESS!”
“Chi!” As tough as she may believe herself to be, if he actually fought back, she would break. Break into hundreds of little tiny pieces. And that would be very, very bad.

Piper had said once that it was hereditary, the influence she had over him. That it came from her mother, and might apply to all demons.
But the influence Chi had was… very different.
She darted past, dove and came up in a poorly grounded guard position, claymore between them. He watched her face as she grinned, apparently reveling in the challenge he posed.
            “Chi, this is foolish.”
She stopped moving and frowned at him, dropping the sword. “Well how else am I supposed to survive the next demon attack?”
That stopped him cold. How was she going to survive? With Raptor nigh-useless at the best of times, and Piper’s focus always on Kuro, who would watch over Chi? Who would take care of her?
She was so happy, so alive. She tried so hard to live in a world where she wasn’t supposed to be. She did her best to adjust to things she wasn’t built for. She was… she was…
            …
She was exactly the sort of thing Hell would put in his path.
He hardly heard her shout “BLESS!” as he stared at her in despair. Deminos would not be happy when he returned all sparkly clean with Holy magic burns.
Frikkin' DONE.
